Art and the Grey Pass

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand we’re back to normal! The last few weeks definitely took a weird turn, but things should finally be leveling out and we can get back to our regularly scheduled programming! Since we missed last week, this week will have the usual blurb about the chapter that released last week, the Grey Pass, in addition to what I wanted to show off this week, which is art. Let’s dive in!

The Grey Pass

Thericia is the largest continent on the Krysheek homeworld by a mile, and while much of it is dominated by jungle, its southwestern corner is a massive archipelago. To reach these islands, however, ones has to get through the towering grey mountains and the valley cutting through them called ‘The Grey Pass.’ This landscape is exactly what it sounds like, grey and empty, but there are still opportunities for discoveries to be made.

On her journey through the pass, Tearna will find all sorts of creatures as she continues to wrangle with the stress of suddenly becoming the Captain of their expedition. It will reach a bit of a boiling point in this chapter where some relationships will be shattered, but the ultimate moment will be Tearna’s discovering of a seemingly brand new creature!

Art Stuff

Time to finally discuss some art topics! I’ve been hard at work on MULTIPLE pieces at the same time, because I have no self control! Hooray! Unfortunately, this means that progress on any one piece has been slow because I’ve been going full ADHD the last month and a half, but progress has been made and they are ready to be shown off! Let’s start with the Sapphire Verdict themed one.

This piece was designed to be a test of my lineart skills. It was an opportunity for me to focus specifically on line art and nothing else, because I know my lineart has, historically, been awful. With this piece, I better learned how to draw the canine faces of Sapphiria’s people, got some experience with machinery, backgrounds, and more celestial type imagery that all turned out moderately well! IF you compare this to some of my earlier pieces, the results are night and day different, and I think it really shows. This piece was never intended to have color, but it is intended to have text. In total, I estimate there are only a few hours left, tweaking outstanding.

This particular piece is obviously a stark departure from Sapphire Verdict stuff. I just wanted to work on some piece where I could put all of my skills fully to the test on a subject that more people understand, and given my fondness for Pokemon and creature in general, I figured why not! This was originally going to be more focused on the fishing incident unfolding, but expanded to incorporate more of the environment around our fishing duo. In my head, I’ve been referring to this as the first of my ambience pieces, an art piece that was designed purely to capture living in a moment of time. Although it’s colored, it’s still far off both in terms of adding more to the scene, coloring, shading, and texturing, but I think you can already see the different my line art practice has been made in the designs, expressions, and movement all throughout this image.

Conclusion

Wait, done already? Yes! I’m not overstaying my welcome this week. I don’t have any huge revelations, and I’m still plowing ahead on a bunch of other projects that need attention. Next week, the next chapter of Tearna’s Journal will release alongside a new bookmark, and we’re also drawing closer and closer to another milestone updated on the Sapphire Verdict. Stay tuned for it all!

Cheers!
